Egypt's Mediterranean Coast

The Mediterranean coast of Egypt extends over 600 miles between Rafah in the east and west Shallum the Egyptian-Libyan border to Alexandria at the center of the stretch. Running along the northern coast of Egypt this stretch of coastline is increasingly popular as a holiday destination and is even tipped by some as the new Sharm el Sheikh.

This stretch of coastline has everything you need for a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings, including the soft golden sands and crystal blue waters.

Located on the edge of a lagoon sea water, the city of Marsa Matrouh is the perfect place to unwind and relax in the sun. On the other side of the lagoon is Gharam Beach, another white sand beach where the agenda is rest and relaxation under the sun. About 25 miles from Marsa Matrouh, you will find Almaza Bay with its large new hotels that sit in the beautiful palm lined sitting on the beach sand gardens.

Most hotels and restaurants in the area cater for holidaymakers in Europe where most of the cuisine is European. However, for visitors wanting a taste of Egyptian cuisine hotels offer authentic dishes. Try kofta (meatballs stuffed peppers), tahini dip with pita bread, chicken or lamb kebabs hot and do not forget to try some tasty Egyptian desserts. A near Marsa Matrouh La Corniche is where you will find restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets such as KFC, McDonalds and Pizza Hut. Try one of the local ahwa (very basic cafes) where you can enjoy some fresh kebabs, kofta and chicken followed by some tea "Shai" (served black with lots of sugar). Local people will be seen in these "Ahwas' sipping tea" Shai "in a game of backgammon.

There are many places to visit during your holiday in Egypt last minute when you want a break from lazing on the golden sandy beaches along the coast. You can take a tour of the monuments of the desert honor those who lost their lives in El Alamein during the Second World War, making a trip to Alexandria (The Pearl of the Mediterranean) at the eastern end of the coast and visit the ancient temples dating back to the time of Cleopatra. Alexandria is an enchanting city with Roman ruins, museums and wonderful cafes where you can watch the world go by while enjoying the fruity aroma of shisha pipes.

Most evening entertainment is provided by the hotels in the form of open-air discos on the beach and dance belly. There are a few clubs in Marsa Matrouh, but most of the nightlife consists than relaxing in cafes "shisha" along the Corniche.
